How to Ship Plants Without Killing Them: What We Do Differently
The single biggest reason people hesitate to buy plants online in India is one honest fear: will the plant survive the journey?
It's a fair concern. Live plants are fragile. They need light, air, moisture and stability, and shipping asks them to give up all four for 24 to 72 hours in a dark box. Most horror stories about online plant orders trace back to one thing: bad packing.
At Floramine, we've spent years figuring this out, one damaged shipment at a time. Here's a look behind the scenes at how we ship plants safely across India, and what you should do the moment yours arrives.
1. We Choose Plants That Travel Well
The first decision happens before packing. Some plants ship beautifully. Others don't. Snake plants, ZZ plants, money plants, lucky bamboo, jade, succulents and cacti all handle transit with grace. Delicate ferns and calatheas are shipped only in cooler months with extra protection. If a plant won't survive the trip to a specific location, we tell customers before dispatch.
2. Every Plant Is Prepped, Not Just Packed
Two days before dispatch, plants are lightly pruned to reduce transpiration stress, watered just enough to keep roots hydrated (never soaked), and moved into transit-ready pots. Loose soil is topped with a layer of decorative pebbles that hold everything in place and reduce moisture loss during the journey.
3. The Packaging Layers That Actually Work
Our shipping box has four layers:
First, the plant's pot is wrapped in a moisture-locked plastic sleeve at the base to protect against water leakage. Second, the pot is fitted snugly into a custom cardboard cradle so it can't shift during transit. Third, crumpled recycled paper fills every gap around the plant to absorb shocks. Fourth, the outer box is reinforced double-corrugated cardboard, labelled with clear "Live Plant, This Side Up" markings.
This system handles almost every drop, jolt and rough handle that Indian courier networks throw at it.
4. Speed Matters (and We Track It)
Every Floramine plant is shipped within 24 hours of packing. We work with courier partners who prioritise live-plant boxes and offer 2 to 4 day delivery windows across most Indian cities. Longer journeys get extra moisture protection. You get tracking updates from the moment the box leaves us.
5. What You Should Do When Your Plant Arrives
Once the box lands, a few small steps make all the difference:
Open the box within a few hours of delivery. Gently remove the plant and any packaging. Place it in a bright, indirect-light spot for 24 hours to help it recover from transit stress. Do not water immediately, wait until the topsoil feels dry to touch. Do not repot for at least a week. Wipe any dust off the leaves gently.
If anything looks damaged, take a photo within 24 hours and message our team. We replace transit-damaged plants at no cost. This is our promise, not a policy buried in fine print.
