The 7 Best Air Purifying Plants for Your Home

Indoor air is often more polluted than the air outside. Paint, polish, carpets, plastics, cleaning sprays and closed AC-cooled rooms slowly build up a mix of invisible pollutants that most Indian homes never think about.

The good news is that plants have been part of the fix for decades. NASA's 1989 Clean Air Study famously identified a handful of common houseplants that filter formaldehyde, benzene, xylene and other pollutants from indoor air. They are still the most reliable, low-effort way to make your home feel fresher without buying anything electronic.

Here are 7 of the best, chosen for how well they work in Indian homes, how forgiving they are to first-time plant parents, and how beautifully they style with a simple ceramic planter and a layer of decorative pebbles.

1. Snake Plant

The gold standard for bedrooms. Releases oxygen at night, filters formaldehyde, benzene, xylene and toluene, and survives 2 to 3 weeks without watering. Ideal for low-light corners and bedside tables.

2. Peace Lily

A top NASA performer. Removes ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene, raises humidity, and produces beautiful white blooms. Perfect for bedrooms and living rooms with medium indirect light. Toxic if chewed by pets.

3. Areca Palm

One of the best natural humidifiers among houseplants. Filters formaldehyde and xylene, and is fully pet-safe. Suits living room corners and semi-shaded balconies. A favourite for Indian homes wanting a tropical feel.

4. Money Plant (Pothos)

The most-loved houseplant in India. Filters formaldehyde, benzene and toluene, tolerates low light, and considered Vastu-friendly. Grows in soil or water. Ideal for shelves, hanging planters and kitchen corners.

5. Spider Plant

One of the most pet-safe air purifying plants you can keep. Filters carbon monoxide, xylene and formaldehyde. Its trailing baby plants look beautiful from a shelf or hanging planter.

6. Aloe Vera

Releases oxygen at night and filters benzene and formaldehyde. Bonus: the gel is useful for burns and skincare. Place near a bright window in the kitchen or bedroom.

7. ZZ Plant

Nearly indestructible. Tolerates the lowest light in the home and filters toluene and xylene. Ideal for offices, study corners and dim living rooms where nothing else grows.

How Many Plants Do You Need?

NASA recommends one to two plants per 100 square feet of indoor space. For a typical Indian home, that's around 6 to 10 plants spread across bedrooms, living room and kitchen. Group them for a stronger humidity effect, and keep them away from direct AC vents. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth once a month so dust doesn't block their air-filtering surface.

Styling Tip: Add Pebble Topdressing

A thin layer of decorative pebbles on top of the soil covers exposed dirt, slows water evaporation, prevents fungus gnats, and instantly makes any planter look styled and finished. White pebbles brighten low-light corners. Black polished pebbles add drama. It's the smallest upgrade with the biggest visual return.
